This 200th edition of Fédéchoses coincides with the launch of the European election campaign, which also marks 50 years of direct universal suffrage. With the planets aligned in such a way, it's impossible not to mention the subject in our pages !
Unfortunately however, what should be the most important election in Europe this mid-decade remains (as ever) confined to the interests of a circle of insiders and activists. As recently as early April, almost one in two French people admitted that they were not interested in the European elections. Nevertheless, many aspects of what is at stake from 06 to 09 June are decisive.
This European election has the misfortune to fall in the same year as the American elections, reinforcing one of the most absurd paradoxes of the European political sphere : undeniable media interest in what is happening on the other side of the Atlantic, even though European citizens have no voice in it. Of course, a return of Donald Trump to the White House would have serious consequences, particularly for the aid given to Ukraine in its war against Russia for the last two years.
That's actually the main thing that will change this election : Ukraine's struggle for survival in the face of the imperialist delusions of a decadent power. Numerous articles in this edition remind us of the importance of a victory and a European destiny for Ukraine. While the EU's eastern neighbourhood is at war, the Israeli-Palestinian conflict has been escalating since last October. It is also impossible for us to look the other way, and our publications in this issue outline a peaceful institutional outcome, whether in the form of a two-state solution, or a purely federal one, as the Israeli historian Schlomo Sand expresses.
The main issue in the 2019 European elections was the climate crisis. While it may no longer feature as prominently in the debates as it once did, it is no less important, far from it. Once again, we wanted to highlight the existential importance of the fight against climate change, all within a global federal framework.
All this shows that the European elections are shrouded in "uncertainty", to use the words of Jo Leinen, author of an article in this 200th edition. While the far right is leading in France, the EPP and the Social Democrats are once again dominating the polls at European level. In an attempt not to give too much weight to this electoral Manicheism, we have given the floor to some of the heads of the French lists (EELV, LFI and Volt) on their vision of Europe.

Heureux hasard, ce 200ème numéro de Fédéchoses coïncide avec le lancement de la campagne des élections européennes, marquant de surcroît les 50 ans du suffrage universel direct pour ce scrutin. Avec un tel alignement des planètes, impossible de passer sous silence le sujet dans nos pages !
Pourtant, ce qui doit être l'élection la plus importante de ce milieu de décennie en Europe reste malheureusement (encore et toujours) confiné à l'intérêt d'un cercle d'initiés et de militants. Début avril encore, près d'un Français sur deux admettait ne pas s'intéresser aux élections européennes. De nombreux aspects de ce qui se joue du 06 au 09 juin prochain sont néanmoins déterminants.
Ce scrutin européen a la malchance de tomber la même année que les élections américaines, renforçant un des paradoxes les plus aberrants de la sphère politique européenne : un intérêt médiatique indéniable pour ce qui se passe outre Atlantique, alors même que les citoyens européens ne peuvent pas y exprimer leur voix. Bien naturellement, un retour de Donald Trump à la Maison Blanche aurait de sérieuses conséquences, en particulier sur l'aide apportée à l'Ukraine dans la guerre que la Russie lui mène depuis deux ans.
Car c'est bien la principale chose qui change la donne pour cette année électorale : la lutte de l'Ukraine pour sa survie face au délire impérialiste d'une puissance décadente. De nombreux articles dans ce numéro rappellent toute l'importance d'une victoire et d'un destin européen de l'Ukraine. Tandis que le voisinage oriental de l'UE est en guerre, le conflit israélo-palestinien connaît depuis octobre dernier une nouvelle escalade. Il nous est aussi impossible de regarder ailleurs et nos publications dans ce présent numéro vont dans le sens d'une issue institutionnelle pacifique, qu'elle soit sous la forme d'une solution à deux états, ou purement fédérale, comme le rappelle l'historien israélien Schlomo Sand.
Le principal combat des élections européennes en 2019 a été la crise climatique. Si elle n'a désormais plus la place qu'elle avait dans les débats, elle n'en est pas moins importante, loin s'en faut. Là encore, nous souhaitions rappeler l'importance existentielle de la lutte contre le changement climatique, le tout dans un cadre fédéral mondial.
Tout cela fait planer sur ces élections européennes un « temps d'incertitude », pour reprendre les termes de Jo Leinen, auteur d'un article dans ce 200ème numéro. Si l'extrême-droite fait la course en tête en France, le PPE et les Sociaux-Démocrates dominent une nouvelle fois les sondages au niveau européen. Soucieux de ne pas accorder trop d'importance à ce manichéisme électoral, nous avons donné la parole à quelques têtes de liste françaises (EELV, LFI et Volt) sur leur vision de l'Europe.
