As 2025 draws to a close, it is customary to look back on the past 12 months. Since Donald Trump came back to power in January 2025, the world seems to have entered a new era. We were already familiar with the denial of reality and the invention of an alternative truth with Putin and other autocrats, but every day we are discovering a little more about what ‘omnipotence’ can lead to. The omnipotence of a man who believes that only his own morality can stop him, for whom the law means nothing and who has respect only for force and its demonstration. The new security strategy, which Françoise Diehlmann offers a precise analysis of, calls for a declaration of independence by the European Union, as proclaimed in an opinion piece published in five European newspapers in December, which we are offering you here.
In this context, the question of the respect of fundamental rights, their protection and also the invention of new ways of ensuring that the law takes precedence over force has become pressing. We devote a special report to this issue.
Similarly, fascist movements that disguise and polish themselves behind a veneer are just as dangerous. Ahead of other articles on the subject, notably related to Marc Lazar’s work on the “melonisation” of Europe, we offer some food for thought.
To take a step back and look at the state of the world, in our section on federalist theory, we offer a long article on Michel Mouskhély, a major thinker on federalism of the first half of the 20th century, thanks to the work of Lela Saralidzé.
This issue is also the last in a series of quarterly publications of Fédéchoses. From 2026 onwards, we will publish three times a year, as a quarterly : in February, June and October. Our magazine is run and produced entirely by volunteers, and we need time to put together issues that continue to interest and engage you. We are always looking for support to continue publishing this magazine, which celebrated its 50th anniversary in 2023..

We are committed to offering you a break from increasingly fast-paced and dystopian news, convinced that federalist analysis is emancipatory and provides leverage for individual and collective action.
In this disordered world, we wish you great activist energy, in all its forms, so that together we can continue to uphold the values that bring us together.
